Originally named Benjamin Grossbaum, Benjamin Graham was a British-born American who made a name for himself as a financial analyst, investor, and professor. He is often referred to as the “pioneer of value investing” and is credited with penning two seminal works in the field: “Security Analysis” (1934), co-authored with David Dodd, and “The Intelligent Investor” (1949).

Graham’s investment approach underscored the importance of independent thought, emotional control, and meticulous security analysis. He emphasized the need to separate a stock’s market price from the actual value of the underlying business. After earning his degree from Columbia University at the young age of 20, Graham embarked on a career on Wall Street, eventually establishing the successful mutual fund, Graham–Newman Corp.

Graham spent many years imparting his knowledge of investing at Columbia Business School, where one of his pupils was none other than Warren Buffett. He later held a teaching position at UCLA Anderson School of Management at the University of California, Los Angeles. Graham’s teachings formed the foundation of value investing strategies employed by mutual funds, hedge funds, diversified holding companies, and other investment entities.

Graham’s books, in chronological order, are as follows:

  1. “Security Analysis” (1934)
  2. “The Intelligent Investor” (1949)
  3. “The Interpretation of Financial Statements” (1955)
  4. “Security Analysis, Part III – Senior Securities With Speculative Features”
  5. “Benjamin Graham on Investing”
  6. “Benjamin Graham: The Memoirs of the Dean of Wall Street” (1996)
  7. “Security Analysis, Part I – Survey and Approach”
  8. “The Rediscovered Benjamin Graham: Selected Writings of the Wall Street Legend” (1999)
  9. “Security Analysis, Part II – Fixed-Value Investments”

These books have had a profound impact on the world of investing, and Graham’s teachings continue to guide investors worldwide. His legacy lives on through his books and his students, who have gone on to become successful investors themselves..
